What if achieving youthful, radiant skin didn’t require invasive treatments or harsh chemicals?
Acupuncture has a long history as a powerful healing technique to treat all manner of ailments and maladies – but did you know it has an equally long history in maintaining youthful skin? Also known as facial rejuvenation, cosmetic acupuncture is a safe, gentle and natural practice
that has been used for thousands of years as both anti-aging and to address dermatological issues. Read on to find out more about cosmetic acupuncture and if it could be right for you!
What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?
Cosmetic Acupuncture is a natural anti-aging treatment that enhances beauty and well-being by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, lifting and firming the skin, and improving overall tone and elasticity. By stimulating circulation, it promotes a radiant, healthy glow from within. Like regular acupuncture, cosmetic acupuncture is a constitutional treatment that helps to address the health of the whole body by adjusting physiological functions and bringing your internal state back into harmony. While this might seem like a modern idea, cosmetic acupuncture sits right alongside other styles of acupuncture in the 5000 years of documentation supporting its practice.
How Does It Work?
When fine needles are gently inserted into the facial skin, they stimulate qi and blood circulation, delivering essential nutrients to the skin cells. This process creates a mild “micro-trauma,” signalling the body to initiate its natural healing response. In turn, fibroblasts—specialised cells responsible for skin repair—are activated, promoting the production of collagen and elastin, the key components of firm, youthful skin. Applied in combination with acupuncture points along the meridians – the pathways in the body through which qi flows – to address constitutional imbalances, this creates a powerful treatment that uses the body’s natural healing mechanisms to help inner beauty radiate to the outside world.

What Can I Expect During a Cosmetic Acupuncture Session?
After a consultation typical of other acupuncture sessions, it’s time to get stuck in!
A cosmetic acupuncture session begins with cleansing the face, removing any makeup before needles are inserted. It is advisable to avoid applying makeup beforehand, if possible, as it will need to be taken off anyway. Needles are inserted first into points to stimulate facial muscles, followed by those used to soften lines and promote collagen production. Points and areas are selected based on individual needs, and use specialised needles designed to be particularly gentle. Typically, the needles will be left in for around 20 minutes, before being slowly removed to minimize the likelihood of discomfort and maximize relaxation.
How Does It Compare to Other Treatments?
Cosmetic acupuncture vs. botox – while botox temporarily stops muscle movement to reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging, cosmetic acupuncture needles act like adaptogens, relaxing tight muscles and stimulating weak ones as required. Unlike botox, cosmetic acupuncture doesn’t use any fillers nor introduce any foreign substances into the body, and focuses on overall skin health rather than just reducing wrinkles.
While it is typically best to avoid areas that have had botox for at least 3 months to avoid counteracting its effects, two treatments can actually be combined by using superficial needling techniques to avoid the muscle level and focus on stimulating collagen production and improving skin health.
Cosmetic acupuncture vs. micro-needling – while both treatments use needles to create “micro-traumas” to stimulate collagen and elastin production and improve circulation in the face, cosmetic acupuncture uses additional points to treat the underlying imbalance that can result in poor skin health. Micro-needling focuses only on the skin, whilst cosmetic acupuncture can also target the facial muscles, supporting additional tone and lifting in the face. Cosmetic acupuncture has a lower downtime in comparison to micro-needling, meaning you can apply makeup immediately after a treatment
